german materials manufacturer covestro welcomed miao wang at its site and offices in shanghai, china. miao is the recently awarded united nations young champion of the earth for the apac region. in the contest, seven young people from around the world had been recognized by the un for their big ideas on environment protection.

miao founded her charity organization “better blue” in 2018. the idea behind it is to bring divers together to enable ever more people to know how to better interact with the ocean on a scientific level, educate about the marine environment and bring partners together to protect marine life. by reaching out to the diver’s community, which is highly sensitive to ocean pollution, they shall become ambassadors for a more sensitive treatment of the ocean and the environment, and a generally more sustainable-savvy lifestyle in china.

“marine littering is a huge problem. however, from 800,000 ngos in china, just 400 are concerned about this topic. i wanted to change that with the help of the divers’ community that i’m fond of since i’m a diver myself,” miao said during her visit. “to tackle this challenge, we need help and we need to collaborate across the whole value chain of plastics. i’m happy that covestro reached out and i realized that the company already does a lot from its end. we are definitely the right partners and i hope we can leverage each other’s networks to reach the bigger goal.”

innovation at heart, sustainability at soul

during her visit at covestro’s premises in shanghai, miao saw what the company does to combine innovation with sustainability and spoke to mentors and internal sustainability ambassadors of the company. she also spent a full day at covestro’s biggest single production site in caojing just outside shanghai, talking to employees, visiting an actual production plant, presenting her topic and getting to know how sustainability is approached in the production of chemicals.

“sustainability is at the core of everything we do,” said dr. angelina prokofyeva, head of sustainability for covestro in china. “as an industrial company we can contribute a lot – but only so much. only when we connect the dots and all work together towards our common goal can we solve the pressing challenges of our time. into that category falls climate change, and into that category falls protecting the marine environment. we are very inspired by miao’s visit and hope we can collaborate further in the future.”

the company has set itself ambitious sustainability goals for 2025, for example reducing specific greenhouse gas emissions by 50% or aligning 80% of research and developments projects with the sustainable development goals (sdgs) of the un. the company also works with its suppliers so that all of them comply with covestro’s sustainability requirements. by cooperating with inspirational young leaders like miao, covestro extends its endeavors ever wider.
